  Ko Tosho Bird Tsuba

TS0275

SOLD

A large early Tosho tsuba, a stylized bird silhouetted in an open circle, good age and color, plain shinchu mimi.  8.43 cm x 8.53 cm x 2.9 mm.  The design, size, and manner in which the central opening is cut, is similar to a tsuba in Sasano that he date as mid-Kamakura.  While this and the weathering of the metal may be consistent with  a very early dating, the thickness would make me consider Muromachi (however, in fairness, I am not sure of the measurement of the thickness due the slightly thickness of the mimi).  The kozuka ana was clearly cut no later than Momoyama.  This has not been submitted for shinsa.
